Brighter Smiles with Professional Teeth Whitening

close up of beautiful white smileThe sheer number of whitening toothpaste, strips, and other products makes it clear how important a white smile is to most people. When it comes to lifting years of set-in stains, professional teeth whitening offers top-level results. Whether you want to look good for a big event or want to boost your confidence, teeth whitening is a simple and effective way to enhance your smile.

Take-home kits are a great option for patients whose hectic schedules make extended office visits difficult. Each kit comes with a custom whitening tray shaped to your teeth, ensuring your treatment is evenly spread across your smile. You can whiten at home at any time of day that’s convenient for you. Simply follow the instructions for safe and efficient results.

How Do Teeth Get Stained?

Dental staining is a common fact of life. Years of exposure to dark or acidic foods, including coffee, soda, tomato sauce, and dark berries, allows traces of pigment to become noticeable discoloration. Tobacco use is another common cause of enamel stains.

Teeth whitening works by penetrating the enamel and lifting these stains, revealing the natural color underneath. Some discoloration isn’t due to food or substances, but more complex issues, such as dental trauma. In these cases, a more extensive solution, such as veneers, may be needed to enhance a tooth’s appearance.

Is Professional Whitening Better than Over-the-Counter Products?

Whitening products you can pick up off the shelf are a popular choice and a decent option for touching up your smile. However, these products lack the strength and efficiency of professional whitening. If you have years of stains to contend with, our professional whitening kit will produce more effective and noticeable results.

Teeth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for teeth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

What does teeth whitening involve?

This type of teeth whitening usually requires two visits.  At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear, plastic, trays.

At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary.  The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening.  It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
